I looked at my alarm, scowling it as it beeped. High-pitched and repeatedly, telling me over and over to ‘get-up, get-up, get-up’ until the hand of my husband stopped it. I turned my head to look at him, as he stayed his arm over my chest, pressing down on the stop button. I smiled at him, the briefest of smiles, he laughed although it sounded tired.
“I don’t want to go.” I whispered, he smiled moving closer to me so his head was over mine.
“You have to go, You’re the head teacher, and it’s the first day of school.” He said, then leant his forehead on mine, “it’ll be fine.” He whispered, so I nodded as he glanced at my clock, “and we have about fifteen minutes until my alarm goes off.” He whispered, I grinned.
“Enough time for a quickie?” I teased; he shook his head amused as he stroked over my stomach.
“No, hand stuff, maybe.” He said raising an eyebrow at me. I did it back, as his hand slid down my stomach, just about reaching my waistband before he kissed me. I hummed into it, making it deeper almost instantly, as his hand got lower and lower.
Until we both sighed, Gareth turning towards the door, and the sound of arguing, he laughed in his groan as he looked back at me.
“That’s not fair.” He said then kissed me again, softly, before lifting the cover and laughing, “I’ll go sort them out.” He said as he squeezed my crotch. I moaned at him as he got out of our bed, he turned towards me at the door as I sat up.
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to masturbate in the shower.” I said, he bit his lip.
“Don’t tease.” He said, genuinely sounding upset so I laughed as he opened the bedroom door, the argument from the landing got louder.
“It’s definitely too early for this.” Gareth said, I smiled as I got out of our bed. Standing in the doorway watching as Patrick and Carter shouted back at Gareth in almost incoherent rambles, until Gareth raised his hand and they both silenced. “What’s the problem?” Gareth asked, Patrick huffed as Carter fired himself up.
“He is always in the bathroom.” He squeaked up to Gareth, “always. It’s like he’s still a girl or something.”
“Hey no.” Gareth said taking Carter’s arms in his hands. “No, we don’t say things like that. You hear?” He said, Carter nodded glumly. “Now you apologise to Patrick.” He said, Carter mumbled something that resembled an apology. “Patrick, bathrooms yours. You’ve got twenty-minutes maximum.” He said, Patrick smirked going into the bathroom as Carter protested. “Cheer up Munchkin, go and get ready for school.” He said, Carter sighed but did. I smiled as Gareth turned back to look at me.
“I love it when you parent.” I said, “sends shivers down my spine.” I added, he laughed as he took my hand spinning me around so I went into our bathroom. I closed the door behind me as Gareth went to the toilet.
“I almost went in theirs, but figured that’d piss them off more.” He said, I laughed as I turned the shower on.
“Good call.” I said nodding, he looked at me so I smiled at him, “do you think we need to talk to Carter about?” I asked my smile dropping, Gareth shook his head, flushing the chain then turning to me.
“We know he loves Patrick. Unconditionally he’s just, ten.” He said in a sigh, “he won’t say it again, I’m pretty certain of that.” He added, I nodded. “I believe you had a date with the shower?” He added, I smirked.
“Care to join me?”
“I’ll take Carter, and Ash.” Gareth said as we stood either side of our bed in varying degrees of dress. “You can take...” he nodded to me so I nodded back
“Patrick.” We said together,
“Talk to him Joey, he’s going to be as nervous as you are. I can guarantee that.” He said, I sighed.
“If I talk to him, you have to wake the teenager.” I said as I clipped my watch together, he laughed.
“Game on.” He replied as he pushed the knot of his tie to his neck and left our room. I watched him go picking up my blazer, shrugging it on as there was a timid knock on our bedroom door. I turned.
“Patrick.” I said, he smiled a strained smile at me, then held his tie up to me. “You’re going to have to learn how to do this.”
“Yeah. I know.” He said as I took it from him, lifting his collar and putting his tie around his neck. He lowered his head, watching as I tied it then lifted his chin as I pushed the knot up. I ran my hand down the length of the tie as he lowered his collar then put my hands on his shoulders.
“How do you feel?” I asked, he shrugged under my hands. “Well, this looks good on you.” I said then ran my fingers though his hair. He smiled at the floor looking away from me until we heard Gareth and Ash’s conversation, which consisted mostly of shouting.
Patrick laughed turning towards them as I looked at Gareth over Patrick’s head. He glanced our way, smiling a big amused smile until Carter walked to his side, hugging his arms around Gareth’s waist. Gareth hugged him back then nodded as Ash came down the stairs.
“Good morning.” He said cheerfully, “ready for school?” He added, Ash rolled his eyes as he shrugged his blazer on, then got his phone out of his pocket and went down the stairs. Patrick followed him, so I walked towards Gareth.
“How’s he feeling?” Gareth asked, I shrugged at him, he smiled. “Nervous then.”
“I think so.” I said as I followed them down the stairs.
“First day of school photo.” Gareth shouted when I got to the bottom of the stairs. I looked
towards Ash and Patrick as they both groaned, then looked up back up the stairs to Gareth. He grinned at me, walking past me, and opened the front door, pointing towards the front garden and the bush we had taken pictures in front of since Ash started Nursery.
In that picture, Ash was four, in a navy-blue jumper and joggers’ combination with a little book bag. I had hold of him, as he refused to get a first day of school picture alone
Four years later, Patrick was in the picture, navy blue jumper and joggers and two almost none existent ponytails, with blue bows, that looked massive compared to how little he was, A big happy smile on his face because he was super excited to be going to his big brother’s school. I looked at Gareth as he rubbed his hand over my arm.
“Hey.” He whispered, “have a good day at school.” He said then kissed me, I nodded.
“You too.” I replied, then got into my car, Patrick got in the passenger seat. We both watched as Gareth reversed out of our drive then I followed.
“Just so I know.” Patrick said as I parked in the school car park. I glanced at him as he put his hand on the door. “Are we going to have one hundred and eighty-nine more of these awkward car rides?” He asked, I sighed so he smiled at me.
“You could get the bus.” I said, he laughed it sounded shocked.
“Game set and match.” He said happily, then held his hand out to me, so I shook it.
“I have a meeting in about twenty minutes.” I said looking at dashboard.
“A meeting about me?”
“No.” I said, “not everything’s about you.” I said, he laughed. “It’s the first day of school. I have to raise moral.”
“Fun.” He said, I nodded then held two fingers to him, he nodded again just slower.
“Do you want me to get Mr Elliot to schedule you in?”
“Yes.” He said quietly, “I don’t know my timetable yet.” He added; I raised an eyebrow at him.
“Second thing?”
“If at any point and I literally mean any point you need to talk, my office is open to you.”
“Really?” He said, I nodded.
“No appointment necessary just knock.”
“Okay...” He said quietly, then raised two fingers to me.
“Go on?”
“I’ll be fine.” He said, I sighed as I smiled at him, “and can I have a pound?”
“A pound?”
“Two? Fifty.”
“For?”
“A bacon barm, if you insist on abandoning me for a moral meeting, I will spend the next two hours with Sue until form.” He said, I nodded to him reaching into my pocket and holding all my coins out to him. “Awesome three pounds.” He said then he smiled at me, “thanks Dad.” He said as he got out the car, I sighed after him. Getting out of the car, locking it and walking to my office.
I fell back into the chair, swinging it from side to side then looking at my phone as it vibrated. I picked it up, swiping away Gareth’s notification and smiling at the picture he’d taken this morning. The three dots bounced underneath as I made the picture bigger resting my thumb on it so it became live, I watched Patrick laughing with Ash before turning and smiling at the camera.
I made the picture smaller again then closed my eyes after reading the message;
Gareth💕: He’ll be okay.
“First day of school coffee for Mr Moore.” Will said, holding a mug to me.
“Thank you.” I said taking it from him, and taking a sip. “How was the summer?” I asked, Will smiled.
“Good. Bailey and I got as much Tyler time in as we could.”
“Is he there now?”
“We moved him in last week, his lessons don’t start for another three weeks but I think the drinking started last night.” He said, I laughed.
“I miss uni.” I said nodding, he nodded with me.
“How was your summer?” He asked, I sighed as I nodded.
“Hard.” I said softly,
“I can only imagine.”
“We got some rest-bite when we went to Portugal. He’s always loved it, as have Carter and Ash, it was just fun and we all relaxed.”
“Officially he now?”
“Officially.” I said nodding, “since the beginning of August. Patrick.”
“Patrick.” He said happily, “perfect.”
“He still wants to see you.”
“I’d be disappointed if he didn’t, he’s like my best friend.” He said, I smiled. “I’ll pencil him into my timetable, sort him out don’t worry.”
“According to Gareth, I’m in a constant state of worry.”
“Gareth may be onto something.” He said, I sighed rubbing my forehead and shaking my head.
“Bonjour.” Bradley said, I looked towards him as he stirred his coffee. “New year. All very exciting.” He said then drank from the coffee.
“How’s teething?” Will asked, Bradley laughed through his teeth.
“Such a cute age.” He said, “and I’ve come to discover I don’t even need sleep to function.”
“Just wait until they enjoy sleep.” I said, “your world will change.” I added, “and you’ll rediscovered sex.”
“You want to rediscover sex, send them to university.”
“That’d be great, but I decided to have three.” I said, Will smirked as Bradley gasped.
“How is little’un doing?”
“He won’t be a little’un much longer.” I said, reaching for my phone. I showed them the picture Gareth had sent.
“I’m so proud of him.” Bradley said nodding, “Patrick?” He asked, I nodded.
“il est Patrick.” I said, he tapped his mug as if he was applauding me.
“Bon vous progressez avec votre francais.” He replied raising his eyebrow at me,
“Oh shut up.” I said, making him laugh as I walked to the circle of couches where most of my teachers were sat.
“Welcome back everyone.”
I sighed, turning so I could lean on my desk.
“It’s the first day of school guys.” I said. Callum, the Year Nine who was a frequent presence in my office smirked as he looked away from me, his accomplice and mortal enemy Conor looked down at his hands. “What on earth do you have to fight about, on the first day?”
“With all my respect sir.” Callum said, “there has been six weeks of summer, our lives didn’t go on hold.” He said, I sighed as Callum grinned at me, because Callum was smart. Possibly one of the smartest kids in this entire school, with only one competition in the form of the smartest girl in this entire school.
He was smart, top of the class and also bored out of his mind. Conor was just the brunt of it, and I think he somewhat enjoyed the fighting, in some primitive boyish way.
“Callum.” I said, he smiled, “if you two end up in my office again before the end of the week, you will both be on report.”
“Sir.” Callum said, as Conor sat up straight.
“No negotiation. It’s been two years of this and I’m done with it. If I see you both again this week, either of you, alone or together, report. Simple as.” I said, they both argued back at me until my office door flew open. They turned to look at it as I frowned at Patrick.
“Dad, you weren’t serious when you said I was getting the bus, right?” he asked, I raised an eyebrow at him as Callum turned back to look at me.
“Dad.” He repeated, I looked at him as he smirked. “I didn’t know you were Patrick’s Dad, Mr Moore.” He said happily. I resisted smiling as best as I could at the fact Callum had called him Patrick with no hesitation.
“You two, go home, and…”
“Yeah, yeah if we’re in your office again.” Callum said,
“We get it.” Conor finished as they both stood, recollecting their blazers and leaving my office. Callum waved at Patrick as he passed, I almost smiled as Patrick looked away shyly, then came further into my office.
“You remember why you don’t have my last name in school, right?” I said as I walked around my desk to pick up my jacket.
“Yeah, so no-one knows you’re my Dad, so no-one treats me differently.” He said nodding slowly to me as if I should know that.
“And what have you just done?”
“Oh…” he said, I smiled at him so he relaxed. “How was today?” I asked, he shrugged as he sat on the opposite side of my desk.
“Not bad. No one even questioned and they read out Patrick Reynolds on the register.” He said then he laughed, “it was awesome.” He said, “Levi gave me the biggest hug ever when I walked in and no-one has said anything, but…”
“But?” I asked, he shrugged as he played with the bottom of his tie,
“But it’s only day one.”
“One hundred and eighty-nine to go.” I said, he nodded as he bit his lip.
“One hundred and eighty-nine to go.” He said, then he laughed, “then, like two more years.”
“Yeah but by then it’ll be old news kid.” I said as I scanned over my emails, ignoring the top two, leaving them for tomorrow morning then signing out of my computer. “Come on, how do you feel about getting some pizza for tea?” I asked, Patrick frowned at me.
“What happened to, healthy eating applies on School terms?” he said as he stood, I smiled,
“We all deserve a treat.” I said squeezing his shoulder, “we all survived the first day back at school.”
“A schedule for you Mr Moore.” Will said as we crossed in the corridor. He held a piece of paper out to me, I frowned as I took it. “Got to keep you in the loop, haven’t I? Or can I do whatever I want, because I’m here for that.” He said amused, I smiled as I read over the paper. It was a very well thought out schedule with a variety of kids initials and their years. I put my finger on the PR.
“Twice?” I said, he nodded,
“He asked. I didn’t want to deny that.” He shrugged, “but, you don’t know that’s your son. Of course.”
“Of course.” I said shaking my head, “thank you Will.” I added, he nodded.
“I got your husbands invite by the way. It’s the first week of term, he already has marking?”
“I guess his headteacher isn’t as nice as me.” I said, grinning at him, he laughed.
“I’ll see you Friday night. I’ll bring the wine.” He said, nodding to me as he continued down the corridor. I laughed as I folded the timetable, he’d given me, slipping it into my binder as I let myself through the doors to my office. I sighed once I got through.
“Really Callum?” I said, he shrugged.
“I just love coming to see you Mr Moore.” He said as he stood and waited for me to open my office door.
